Joseph T. McNally

Joseph T. McNally is the Acting United States Attorney for the Central District of California, the largest U.S. Attorney’s Office outside of Washington, D.C., serving seven counties and nearly 20 million people.
With over 15 years of experience as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Mr. McNally has prosecuted some of the most significant federal criminal cases within the district. His casework includes the ongoing Pacific Hospital investigation, which led to the conviction of 20 doctors and healthcare executives involved in a $50 million bribe and kickback scheme. Other notable cases include the conviction of a federal law enforcement officer and his wife for money laundering and narcotics trafficking; the conviction of a senior Mexican Mafia leader for racketeering after a multi-month trial; convictions of individuals involved in an international money laundering operation processing $60 million through Los Angeles-based jewelry businesses; and a case in which an Orange County lawyer and business partners were convicted for defrauding homeowners in a loan modification scam.
In 2016, Mr. McNally received the U.S. Department of Justice’s Director’s Award for Superior Performance for his role in convicting a Eurasian organized crime leader involved in a multi-million dollar bank fraud and identity theft scheme while operating from state prison. He has tried 14 cases and argued before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals several times.
Before becoming Acting United States Attorney, Mr. McNally served as First Assistant U.S. Attorney, Deputy Chief of the Violent and Organized Crime Section, and Head of the Orange County Office. In 2020, he worked as Senior Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for Legal Policy at the Department of Justice, advising senior DOJ leadership on criminal law policy. Mr. McNally has also been a faculty member at the Department’s National Advocacy Center, where he trained other prosecutors.
Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mr. McNally clerked for the Honorable D. Lowell Jensen, United States District Judge, in the Northern District of California. He earned his B.S. from Santa Clara University and his law degree from UC Berkeley.
