Lawrence Cameron

Acting United States Attorney // Western District of North Carolina

Lawrence J. Cameron was appointed Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina (WDNC) on February 12, 2025. In this capacity, he serves as the chief federal law enforcement officer for the district, overseeing an office of approximately 100 federal prosecutors and staff in Charlotte and Asheville. The WDNC serves more than three million residents across 32 counties in western North Carolina, as well as the Qualla Boundary, home to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the largest Native American community in the eastern United States.

As Acting U.S. Attorney, Mr. Cameron is responsible for managing all litigation involving the United States in the district. This includes prosecuting federal criminal violations, handling civil lawsuits involving the government, and pursuing efforts to collect judgments and restitution for victims and taxpayers.

Mr. Cameron joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in February 2022 as First Assistant United States Attorney. In this role, he oversaw the Office’s day-to-day operations and supervised the Civil, Criminal, Appellate, and Administrative divisions. Despite his leadership position, Mr. Cameron maintained an active caseload, managing numerous criminal and civil cases, including those involving public corruption, fraud, drug trafficking, illegal firearms, and violations of the False Claims Act.

Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office for WDNC, Mr. Cameron was a partner at McGuireWoods’ Raleigh office, where he represented clients in government investigations, civil litigation, regulatory enforcement, and white-collar criminal defense matters.

From 2014 to 2018, Mr. Cameron served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) in the Eastern District of North Carolina, focusing on complex narcotics investigations, opioid diversion cases involving medical professionals, and public corruption cases.

Earlier in his career, from 2010 to 2014, Mr. Cameron was an Assistant District Attorney in Wake County, North Carolina, where he prosecuted a wide range of cases, including drunk driving and homicide.

Mr. Cameron earned his undergraduate degree from Hampton University in 2007, graduating cum laude, and his law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law in 2010, also cum laude.
